Our Maple Trees on a Winter Day
Maple Syrup Being Studied in New Hampshire

An interesting video clip of one woman's research on the connection between climate change and maple sap and syrup production. Citizen science anyone? We've lost 2 of our 13 maple trees since we've been here (the past 10 years) and the beautiful big tree by our pool is definitely in distress. Early leaf loss this year. Last year's syrup was dark. But that was only one year. It'll be interesting to see what happens this year with such a warm and mild winter so far and basically no snow.
Fingers are crossed for a good year despite the odd climate.

Still love tapping with my son, age 9. Been hobbyists for 4 years and read most everything. Our trees were tapped Feb 11 and the sap is running well in central NH.
Couldn't help but notice that sensationalism has affected our pastime, as well. Sure the lwesther is strange, but it's never constant...just dry this year. Check this link: http://jrsalzman.com/2012/01/11/maple-syrup-and-the-global-warming-myth/
Happy sugaring!
Hi sb, Glad you are having fun tapping with your son and your year is off to a great start! My son who is 25 is helping us tap this year. He also grew up with this and looks forward to it each year. I only wish I had tapped sooner.
While I won't get into a political/scientific thing on my blog about one of my favorite hobbies I do want to comment on the link provided. There is widescale concern over the health of our maple industry due to effects from climate change. I do not believe the industry is doomed by this one woman. I posted her clip here because she is one tapper sharing her observations. With that said, let's put that topic aside and focus on the absolute fun of making maple syrup! We tap today and I can't wait. Mary
